Contributions to General Mixed Integer Knapsack Problems

This paper deals with a general mixed integer knapsack polyhedron for which we introduce and analyze a new family of inequalities. We discuss the value of this family both from a theoretic and a computational point of view.

Integrality Gaps of Integer Knapsack Problems

We obtain optimal lower and upper bounds for the (additive) integrality gaps of integer knapsack problems. In a randomised setting, we show that the integrality gap of a “typical” knapsack problem is drastically smaller than the integrality gap that occurs in a worst case scenario.

Integer knapsack problems with set-up weights

The Integer Knapsack Problem with Set-up Weights (IKPSW) is a generalization of the classical Integer Knapsack Problem (IKP), where each item type has a set-up weight that is added to the knapsack if any copies of the item type are in the knapsack solution. The k-item IKPSW (kIKPSW) is also considered, where a cardinality constraint imposes a value k on the total number of items in the knapsack...

Fast Fourier Transform and its applications to integer knapsack problems

In this paper we suggest a new efficient technique for solving integer knapsack problems. Our algorithms can be seen as application of Fast Fourier Transform to generating functions of integer polytopes. Using this approach, it is possible to count the number of boolean solutions of a single n-dimensional Diophantine equation 〈a, x〉 = b in O(‖a‖1 ln ‖a1‖ ln n) operations. Another application ex...

On the knapsack closure of 0-1 Integer Linear Programs

Many inequalities for Mixed-Integer Linear Programs (MILPs) or pure Integer Linear Programs (ILPs) are derived from the Gomory corner relaxation, where all the nonbinding constraints at an optimal LP vertex are relaxed. Computational results show that the corner relaxation gives a good approximation of the integer hull for problems with general-integer variables, but the approximation is less s...
